The Power of Being Proactive
Nick had been widowed for 15 years, before finally remarrying. Nick’s goal was to take care of himself and his new wife, Nora, if she ever became disabled. Unfortunately, one of his two sons, Adam, did not share this particular goal with him. In fact, acting in his father’s interests Power of Attorney, Adam made every effort to ensure that Nora was not cared for and that funds were not allocated to her care. Frustrated with his current situation, Nick elicited the aid of his attorney who was successful in satisfactorily managing Nick’s financial assets by developing new trusts and naming himself as trustee with a bank as successor trustee. Not knowing how to cope with the balancing act between Nick’s wishes and his son’s, the attorney brought LCI in on the case. LCI was named as successor Power of Attorney for Health Care for Nick and his wife. Both Nora and Nick have worked with a Life Care Manager to outline their life choices including donating their eyes, specific choices about medical treatments, and final wishes for services and funeral arrangements. Nick and his wife are sitting down with the son to outline his choices of decision makers to avoid any confusion in the future. Now Nick and Nora are more relaxed and confident that their wishes will be followed. Their next challenge is to determine who will step in to make decisions for their two elderly dogs. LCI continues to work to proactively prevent any future conflict and controversy between Nick and Adam’s wishes regarding Nick’s financial assets and health care decisions. back. . .
